Most JET’s in Iwate are here on a 3-year visa. Please check your own visa status. If you are on a one-year visa you will need to renew this visa should you decide to recontract for another year. Remember that you must have a valid visa at all times during your stay in Japan.
Renewing your visa involves a lot of paperwork, but in itself is not too complicated. You will not receive travel expenses for your two trips to the immigration office, and you will have to pay the fee yourself. However, you will be granted special leave to do so. You will need to make your first trip (to submit your application) sometime in the month before it expires, followed by a second trip about a week later to have the visa stamped into your passport.
You will need the following documents:
1. Terms and Conditions of Contract in both English & Japanese, showing the new contract dates
2. Form 2 (在留期間更新依頼書 zairyû kikan kôshin iraisho)
3. Form 3 (在留期間更新予定書 zairyû kikan kôshin yoteisho)
4. Certificate of Employment (在職証明書 zaishoku shômeisho)
5. Guarantee Letter (身元保証書 mimoto hoshôsho) - your school/office can provide this
6. Statement of Annual Income (源泉徴収書 gensen chôshûsho) - you should have received this in February; or Certificate of Income (給与証明書 kyûyo shômeisho) – schools/offices can provide this
7. Revenue stamp (収入印紙 shûnyû inshi) ¥4,000 from a post office – you won’t need this until the second visit
8. Passport
9. Alien Registration Card / Gaijin Card (外国人登録証明書 gaikokujin tôroku shômeisho)
