We recommend you keep a copy of these numbers, your own address and phone number, and emergency phrases (see below) by your phone.
Emergency Numbers
Police: 110
Dial 110 to contact the police in case of emergency, crime, accident etc. Keep calm, and give the police your name and address, the location and (if possible) nature of the problem. Be sure to become acquainted with your nearest koban (police box). They are found in the majority of residential areas throughout Iwate, including most small villages.
Fire and Ambulance: 119
Both the Fire Department and Ambulance Service are connected through the same number - 119. When you dial this nummber, the operater will ask you:
Kaji desu ka, kyuukyuu desu ka? - Fire or ambulance service?
Reply "kaji" for fire, or "kyuukyuu" for the emergency ambulance service.
You should consider purchasing a fire extinguisher - shoukaki - for your home if one is not already accessible. Prices start around ￥6,000.

kyuukyuusha = Ambulance
kega = Injury
byouki = Illness
yakedo = Burn
jiko = Accident
